We have the pleasure to invite you to the seminar of Prof. José Luis García of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), who will explain all about “Emerging trends in environmental biotechnology.”
The aim of this talk is to review from a global perspective what are the main environmental challenges that the world is facing today and how they can be addressed through research using biotechnological tools. Some examples of what is currently done in the Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory of Prof. José Luis García will be discussed. The focus will lay on implementing sustainable industrial solutions by applying systems metabolic engineering approaches using different bacteria and yeast as cell factories. These examples include green biotransformation processes to obtain compounds of pharmaceutical interest, CO2 capture through biological processes, the production of microbial oils from lignocellulosic waste, the production of building blocks to synthesizing bio-based polymers, the production of biopolymers through fermentation, culture of microalgae for the production of compounds of industrial interest, the production of bio-oil through HTL technologies and the decontamination of waste water.
Prof. Jose Luis Garcia is professor of CSIC and leader of Environmental Biotechnology Lab from the Centre for Biological Research (Madrid, Spain). His research focuses on biochemistry, genomics and biotechnology and resulted in more than 300 publications and 30 patents. He was founder and president of the Spanish Society of Biotechnology. Since 1995 he has been a pioneer in the implementation in Spain of automatic DNA sequencing and has founded several companies dedicated e.g. to genetic diagnosis, massive genome analysis and production of biomaterials.
This seminar will take place on Friday September 13th, 13h30, at Ghent University, Campus Coupure, Coupure Links 653, 9000 Ghent, building E, room E2 or E3, depending on the number of attendees. Registration is free, but mandatory. Please register via: https://event.ugent.be/registration/Garcia130924.
