We have the pleasure to invite you to a talk given by Prof. John Morrissey, senior lecturer in Microbiology and leader of a research group in Yeast Biotechnology at University College Cork. Prof. Morrissey currently coordinates two large multi-partner EU-funded H2020 projects – CHASSY and YEASTDOC and was recently (2019) appointed Editor in Chief of FEMS Yeast Research.
Prof. Morrissey will give a talk on “Domestication and Biotechnology – Evolution and applications of sugar transporters in Kluyveromyces yeasts”. Kluyveromyces lactis and Kluyveromyces marxianus are well-known for their for uses in food and industrial biotechnology, with the capacity to use diverse sugars being important for these applications. We have identified and characterised multiple sugar transporters in K. marxianus and have uncovered interesting features, including hitherto unknown signatures of domestication in both K. lactis and K. marxianus. Genomic rearrangements, gene transfer and neofunctionalisation have all played a role in the evolution of sugar transporters and habitat adaption of these yeasts. The presentation will review these data and discuss the implications for industrial biotechnology.
